Zyg Baranski is the Serena Professor of Italian and the Head of the Department of Italian. This year we are pleased to welcome new Fellows from all of the disciplines represented in the Academy, displaying a variety of cutting-edge specialisms, from mediaeval art to game theory, from Islamic history to philosophy of physics, height versus weight chart from ethnomusicology to the economic analysis of law. Her research interests centre on the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century drama of the Low Countries on which she has widely published. Wendy Bennett is Professor in French Philology and Linguistics and Fellow in French at New Hall. Her other specialist area is translation theory and methodology, and she is also a qualified professional translator. His book The Poet in Society:Art, Consumerism and Politics in Stéphane Mallarmé was published in 2003 and he has published several articles and chapters on Mallarmé, Zola and the visual arts.
This year’s winners include Professor Andrew Fleming (Emeritus Professor of Archaeology, University of Wales, Lampeter), who will receive the inaugural award of the John Coles Medal for Landscape Archaeology. They provide extra language teaching to the students in those subjects, provide links with the countries concerned and are able to bring us up to date with the latest slang and the most recent cultural preoccupations and fashions. Her publications include the first translation and edition of Juan Ruiz's Libro de buen amor to appear in England (Everyman edition), as well as essays and articles on the Libro de buen amor, Berceo and the Poema de mio Cid.

An external Director of Studies, Dr. MML students at New Hall are therefore in a very advantageous position and very well supported in all aspects of their MML studies.
